Hi there! I'm Dr. Tina,
I have a confession: I used to think microbes were mostly the enemy.
As an infectious disease doctor, my job has been pretty straightforward for years, find the bad bugs, kill them, help people get better.
I’ve spent countless nights wrestling with mysterious infections and stubborn bacteria.
But then I began to study about the microbiome, and everything changed.
The more I learned, the more I appreciated this invisible community we've largely ignored.
One that might hold some of the keys to the questions we face every day in practice.
Why do some patients recover faster than others?
Why do some people seem naturally more resistant to certain infections?
Why do antibiotics work brilliantly for some patients but leave others struggling with complications?
The microbiome research is connecting dots I didn't even know were there.
So… What’s the Microbiome?
You’re not just you.
You’re you plus about 100 trillion tiny roommates: in your gut, on your skin, in your mouth.
Pretty much everywhere.
They’re not just hanging out. They help you digest food, fight infections, regulate immunity, even influence mood.
Literally, your built-in cleaning crew, security team, and wellness coaches, working 24/7 for free!
Why This Newsletter?
We’re living through incredible times.
For the first time, we can truly understand and explore this hidden world, and it’s changing everything we thought we knew about health and disease.
There’s a problem though;
Much of the info out there is either too technical, too simplified, or just plain wrong.
Busy people (like you!) don’t have time to sort through the noise.
So, I created this space to share clear, compassionate insights about the microbiome with honesty about what we know and what we're still figuring out.
what’s real, what’s hype, and what might actually help.
What We'll Explore
The Story So Far: From “all germs are bad” → “most are actually pretty great.”
Meet Your Microbes: The good guys, the troublemakers, and the in-betweens.
Cool Technology: Sequencing and diagnostics that let us peek into this invisible world.
Real Impact: Stories from the clinic and everyday life.
Looking Ahead: Why this research matters for your health and the future of medicine.
My Promise to You
I don’t have all the answers, actually no one does.
This field is moving so fast that what we learn today might be updated tomorrow.
But I’ll always:
Share what I’m learning, as I learn it.
Be honest when something sounds too good to be true.
Explain in plain English.
Admit when I don’t know (happens more than you’d think!).
A Personal Note
As doctors, we're taught to focus on disease, but the microbiome is teaching me something different.
That health is more than just the absence of illness, but this beautiful, complex dance between us and our microscopic partners.
Understanding this dance can transform not just how we treat disease, but how we think about wellness, prevention, and what it truly means to be healthy.
I'm excited to share this journey with you, and I hope you'll share yours with me too.
Are you ready to meet your microbes? Let’s dive in together.
Warmly,
Dr. Tina Agbaosi
